How does screen timeout work?
There is a setting called screen timeout in smartphones. When the user does not touch the screen for some time or does not interact with the phone, the screen turns off automatically. The main reason for this is battery saving.
Actually, the screen of the mobile is the part which consumes the most electricity. If the screen remains on continuously, the battery can drain very quickly. Therefore, companies set a certain time in the phone like 15 seconds, 30 seconds or 1 minute, after which the screen automatically turns off.
If someone feels that his phone is locking too quickly or the screen turns off immediately, then this time can also be changed. By going to the phone’s settings, there is an option for screen timeout or sleep in the display or screen brightness section, where it can be increased. Sometimes even when power saving mode is on, this time is reduced so that the battery can last longer.
The real reason for the screen turning off during a call
When you talk to someone on the phone and take the mobile near your ear, the screen often turns off immediately. The proximity sensor installed in the phone is responsible for this. This sensor is installed in the upper part of the phone, near the front camera and speaker. As soon as this sensor senses that the phone has come too close to something like your ear or face, it turns off the screen.
Its advantage is that during a call, there is no risk of accidentally pressing any button on the screen like mute, hold or disconnecting the call with your cheek or ear. Besides, keeping the screen off also saves battery. As soon as you remove the phone from your ear, the sensor detects the distance again and the screen turns on again.
When can this become a problem
Sometimes it also happens that the screen starts turning off and on again and again without any reason. This often happens when dust, dirt or a screen protector comes over the proximity sensor. In some cases, the mobile cover also covers the sensor due to which it does not function properly. In such a situation, it may be helpful to lightly clean the upper part of the phone or remove the cover and check. If the problem persists even after this, it could be a sign of a software glitch, overheating or battery-related problem.
Use this feature wisely
Actually, the automatic switching off of the mobile screen is not a defect but a smart security and battery saving feature. This protects the phone from unwanted touches, improves battery life and makes using the phone easier during calls. If these settings are understood and used properly, then the smartphone works better for a long time and the battery also lasts longer.
