Will case not be filed against Professor Mahmudabad who posted on Operation Sindoor? SC told Haryana government to show a soft attitude

While hearing the case of Ashoka University Professor Ali Khan Mahmudabad, the Supreme Court has suggested the Haryana government to be leniency. Ali Khan Mahmudabad had posted on social media about Operation Sindoor, for which he is accused of endangering the sovereignty and integrity of the country.

On Tuesday (January 6, 2026), the bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi was told that the Haryana government has not yet given approval to run the case in this matter. The court asked Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, appearing on behalf of the Haryana government, when the charge sheet was filed in the case.

According to the report of Live Law, ASG Raju said that the charge sheet has been filed on August 22, 2025. He told that the approval to prosecute the professor is still pending. On this, the bench said that the government should show greatness by not giving sanction to prosecute the professor. However, the court also made it clear that if the case is closed, Ali Khan Mahmudabad is also expected to behave responsibly in future.

ASG SV Raju sought more time to ask the Haryana government whether it would be generous enough to give its approval and close the case. The Supreme Court allowed ASG Raju to take instructions and adjourned the hearing of the case for six weeks.

Haryana Police had arrested Ali Khan Mahmudabad on May 18 last year after two FIRs were registered against him. On May 21, the Supreme Court granted him bail, but refused to stay the investigation. The allegation is that he endangered the sovereignty and integrity of the country by commenting on Operation Sindoor.
