‘Writ courts are not the solution to all problems’, Supreme Court said on YouTuber’s petition

The Supreme Court on Tuesday (January 20, 2026) rejected the petition filed by a YouTuber, in which he had sought directions to open his office sealed in Chennai over the allegations against a film producer and to return the seized equipment.

The film producer had accused the YouTuber of assault and extortion. A bench of Justices Dipankar Dutta and Satish Chandra Sharma refused to hear Savukku Shankar’s plea challenging an order passed by the Madras High Court and asked him to approach a judicial magistrate.

The bench told senior advocate Balaji Srinivasan, appearing for Shankar, ‘Do not think that the writ court is a panacea for all problems. The petition is dismissed. The term writ court is also used for High Court and Supreme Court.

The Madras High Court had on December 30, 2025, refused to stay the sealing order and directed the YouTuber to approach the concerned magistrate under sections 105 to 107 of the Indian Civil Defense Code (BNSS), 2023.

Shankar, in his petition, had sought directions to open the seal of his office premises at No. 111, second floor of Aranganathan Illam, 3rd Street, Jai Kasturi Parthasarathy Nagar, Adambakkam, Chennai and stop the deployment of police personnel at the entrance of the premises.

On December 26 last year, the Madras High Court had granted interim bail to Shankar in 17 criminal cases on health grounds. The court had noted that the repeated curbs on his personal liberty by the Tamil Nadu police could only amount to “abuse of the process of law”.

Shankar was arrested from his residence on December 13 and booked under various sections of the Indian Justice Code (BNS). The prosecution alleges that he had extorted money from a film producer.
