The year 2025 was memorable for horror film lovers. Many powerful horror films were released this year. In which new stories and the return of popular franchises created a shiver in the minds of the audience. From psycho-thriller to supernatural and folklore based films, there was a tension throughout the year.
This year, the horror genre created a huge stir at the box office and OTT. The audience shuddered after watching the hair-raising scenes and many films became the topic of discussion. In South films, stories based on folklore and customs connected with the audience. Overall, this year was a great year for the horror genre, where new and old franchises were successful in scaring the audience.

The year started with ‘Chhori 2’ released on Amazon Prime Video on 11 April 2025. Like the first part, this sequel starring Nushrat Bharucha and Soha Ali Khan kept the audience captivated with supernatural elements and psychological scares. The story of a mother’s fight to save her daughter and how she faces terrifying forces has garnered a lot of appreciation. This film was known for adding social message to horror.

‘The Bhootani’ hits theaters on May 1. Starring Sanjay Dutt, Mouni Roy, Sunny Singh and Palak Tiwari, this horror-comedy was based on the story of a ghost living on a virgin tree in a college campus. Laughing and scaring, this film provided light entertainment, although some called it more comedy than horror.

Mother
Kajol’s ‘Maa’ released on June 27. This was a mythological horror film, in which Kajol played a mother who takes the form of Goddess Kali to save her daughter. Based on demonic curse and village folklore, this film was a mixture of motherhood and supernatural. Kajol’s performance was praised.

Malayalam horror thriller ‘Dice Era’ hits theaters on October 31 on Halloween. Pranav Mohanlal starrer, this film was made under the direction of Rahul Sadashivan. The story of supernatural events in the life of a rich architect thrilled the audience. Later, this film, which was streamed on Jio Hotstar on December 5, became one of the most successful horror films of the year.

Baramulla
‘Baramulla’ released on Netflix on 7 November. Starring Manav Kaul and Bhasha Sumbli, this supernatural thriller was based on the investigation of missing children in Baramulla, Kashmir. The secrets hidden in the police officer’s house and elements inspired by Kashmiri Pandits gave it emotional depth. The different storyline and hair-raising scenes made it special.

Apart from this, horror films like ‘Thama’ also made waves this year. The Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna starrer film also had a light touch of horror. The film got a lot of love from the audience.
