The Supreme Court on Tuesday (January 6, 2026) adjourned the hearing for three months on the petition filed by journalist Mahesh Langa in the money laundering case related to financial fraud registered by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in Ahmedabad.
A bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi adjourned the hearing of the case till April 7 as Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the ED, told the court that the case was progressing and they needed time.
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Langa, informed the court that the journalist is cooperating with the special court. The Supreme Court had granted interim bail to Langa on December 15 and ordered the case to be heard on a daily basis.
The court had imposed certain conditions on the journalist, in which he was asked not to write any article about his pending case in any media establishment and not to request for postponement of any kind of hearing before the special court.
Charges have not been framed yet in this case, in which the ED has given the names of nine witnesses. On July 31 last year, the Gujarat High Court had rejected Langa’s bail plea in this case on the grounds that if he was granted bail, the prosecution’s case would be harmed.
The ED had said on February 25 that it had arrested Langa in connection with the investigation into a money laundering case related to alleged financial fraud. The journalist was first arrested in October 2024 in a Goods and Services Tax (GST) fraud case.
The money laundering case against Langa is related to two FIRs lodged by the Ahmedabad Police, in which he is accused of cheating, criminal embezzlement, criminal breach of trust, cheating and causing loss worth lakhs of rupees to some people.
