On Wednesday night, an attempt was made to carry out a deadly attack on former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and President of National Conference, Dr. Farooq Abdullah. He had come to attend the wedding of a lawyer at Hotel Royal Park in Greater Kailash area of Jammu. Meanwhile, the attacker fired at the former CM from very close range. Officials said the incident occurred when Farooq Abdullah, Deputy Chief Minister Chaudhary and Chief Minister’s advisor Nasir Aslam Wani were leaving the venue. The accused who opened fire has been identified as Kamal Singh Jamwal.
The attacker Jamwal is a resident of Purani Mandi area. He reached behind Farooq Abdullah with a pistol and fired. Two officers of the security branch of Jammu and Kashmir Police—an inspector and a sub-inspector—captured him. Deputy CM Chaudhary has called this incident a lapse in security. According to news agency PTI, officials said that Jamwal is over 70 years old and was in an intoxicated state at the time of the attack. He said he fired one shot before his weapon was snatched away by the security personnel and he was thrown to the ground. However, no one was injured in the firing.
Police surprised by attacker’s claim
The accused is also surprised by the claims he has made before the police. Jamwal told the police that he was planning to kill Farooq Abdullah for the last 20 years. Although he called it a personal agenda. Security personnel have recovered a pistol from him, which he is claiming to be a licensed one.

According to officials, Farooq Abdullah and Choudhary had come to congratulate JKNC leader BS Chouhan on his son’s marriage and were present at the venue for more than an hour. City South Superintendent of Police Ajay Sharma said in a post on ‘X’, ‘An incident of firing from a licensed weapon took place at a wedding ceremony in the presence of former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah. The accused has been arrested and detailed investigation is underway. There is no doubt about the terrorist aspect in this.

A video of this incident has also surfaced, in which the accused can be seen going very close to Farooq Abdullah and firing. As soon as he fires, the security personnel present there knock him down and control him. Jammu and Kashmir Cabinet Minister Satish Sharma while talking to ABP News said that this incident should be investigated. He said that Farooq Abdullah is a great leader of India, there should be security like his. This is a security lapse although they are absolutely fine. When he came out of here, there was not a wrinkle on his face.
Expressing concern over the incident, the Deputy Chief Minister told the journalists that you should ask the security personnel and the police as to how such a big mistake happened. He said, ‘This is a huge lapse in security. When former Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister and advisors of the Chief Minister are present in a function and someone can enter inside with weapons, then you can imagine what the security arrangements would have been like.

Expressing displeasure over this attack, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said, ‘Allah is merciful. My father narrowly escaped.
