Android Smartphone: To improve the speed and battery life of smartphones, Google is now preparing to make an important change in the Android system. The company has introduced a new technology to optimize the core system of Android i.e. the kernel which is called Automatic Feedback‑Directed Optimization (AutoFDO). The purpose of this new technology is to improve the performance of Android phones, open apps faster and reduce battery consumption.
Google focuses on improving Android Kernel
Actually, the kernel of Android works like a link between the hardware, processor and apps of the smartphone. This system decides how much of the phone’s processor will be used for which purpose. According to the information, the kernel manages about 40 percent of the total CPU time of any Android phone. In such a situation, if even a little improvement is made in it, it can have a big impact on the overall speed and smoothness of the phone. For this reason, Google is now working on optimizing this part in a smarter way.
Optimization will be done from real usage data
The specialty of the new AutoFDO technology is that it does not work only on the basis of guesswork. For this, such tests are conducted in the lab in which popular Android apps are used in exactly the same way as people use them in everyday life. During these tests, special tools record which parts of the system are being used the most. In technical language these are called hot code paths. This information is later used when re-engineering the kernel so that the most frequently used parts can be optimized first.
How is the new technology different from the old method?
When traditionally building a kernel, developers usually assume how the software will be used. But AutoFDO eliminates this guesswork and organizes the code based on real usage data. This allows the compiler to make better decisions and make the most frequently used parts of the system work faster and more efficiently.
Better performance shown in initial test
This technology has shown positive results in Google’s initial tests. According to the company, the boot time of the smartphone has reduced by about 2.1 percent. At the same time, for the first time in the phone, an improvement of about 4.3 percent has been seen in the speed of opening the app i.e. cold app launch. Apart from this, better results have also been obtained in many other parameters related to the overall performance of the system.
Benefit will be available in upcoming Android versions
Google is implementing this new technology in new kernel versions of Android, including branches like android16-6.12 and android15-6.6. There are plans to include it in future versions like android17-6.18. Due to this change being made at the kernel level, in the future, apps in Android smartphones will open faster than before, multitasking will be smoother and the overall performance of the phone will feel more responsive.
