Ashoka University Professor Ali Khan Mahmudabad has got relief in the case registered in Haryana for the controversial social media post on Operation Sindoor. On Monday (March 16, 2026), the Haryana government told the Supreme Court that it has decided to close the case against Ali Khan Mahmudabad, Associate Professor of Ashoka University. The Supreme Court has also stopped hearing on Ali Khan’s petition. The court cautioned him and said that while writing something publicly, everyone’s feelings should be kept in mind.
Additional Solicitor General SV Raju appeared on behalf of the Haryana government before the bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi and told the court that the state government has closed the case against Ali Khan Mahmudabad. In the last hearing, the Supreme Court was told that the charge sheet has been filed on August 22, 2025, but the state government has not yet given approval to file a mukaldama against Ali Khan Mahmudabad.
On this, the court had advised the state government to show greatness, and also told Ali Khan Mahmudabad that if the case against him is closed, then he is expected to behave responsibly in future. In today’s hearing, the court told Ali Khan Mahmudabad that sometimes while writing, one has to understand the hidden meaning between the words. We need to be careful and also take care of the feelings of others. The court said that we have no doubt that the petitioner is a high-class expert/professor. Justice Bagchi said that the professor will have to be careful that such a case does not happen in future.
This hearing was going on on the petition of Ali Khan Mahmudabad. He had filed this petition in May to cancel two FIRs registered against him in Haryana. He was also arrested after the FIR was registered. However, on May 21, 2025, he got interim bail from the court. While granting him bail, the Supreme Court also reprimanded him. While ordering interim bail, the court had also ordered an SIT investigation.
