The hearing of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) case of the voter list was stopped briefly on Monday (December 29, 2025) at the Chinsurah-Mogra block office in West Bengal’s Hooghly district when Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Asit Majumdar objected to booth-level agents (BLAs) being kept out of the hearing.
The ongoing hearing in the block office for three assembly constituencies was stopped after Majumdar requested that the BLA be allowed to be present during the hearing. He demanded that the officer either give permission in writing to BLA to attend the hearing or not give permission.
Majumdar told reporters, ‘Until the BLA is given permission or the authorities tell us in writing that they will not be allowed, we will not allow the hearing.’ After this dispute, the entry and exit gates of the block office were closed. As per the Election Commission guidelines, BLAs are not allowed to be present during such hearings.
Majumdar later softened his stance and allowed the hearing to resume citing humanitarian grounds as many people had traveled long distances to attend the process. He, however, did not clarify whether future hearings would be allowed to proceed without the presence of the BLA.
BJP alleged that the MLA had done this on the instructions of Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee. The party claimed that Banerjee had suggested allowing the BLA during the hearing during a digital meeting on Sunday. Leader of opposition in the state assembly, Subhendu Adhikari, demanded registration of an FIR against Majumdar and deployment of central forces if information about such obstruction was received.
Trinamool Congress, however, defended Majumdar. Party spokesperson and IT cell state president Debanshu Bhattacharya said the BLA should be allowed as many people are not able to understand why their names can be removed from the voter list without proper explanation.
