There is an uproar in Sydney, Australia. Here a 5 year old tribal girl from a remote town has been murdered. A man has been arrested on this suspicion. After this, hundreds of people have come out on the streets. Meanwhile, clashes have been seen between security forces and protesters.
At the same time, in this entire matter, the Prime Minister of Australia, the Police Commissioner of Northern Territory and a spokesperson of the victim’s family have appealed to maintain peace. This appeal has been made when a crowd of about 400 tribal people gathered near the hospital on Thursday night. The suspect was beaten unconscious in the hospital by an angry mob. After this he was admitted to the hospital.
Government channel ABC reported that in the footage of the protest, members of the crowd are demanding revenge. In tribal societies, payback means traditional and mostly physical punishment.
The angry mob attacked police officers and medical staff with stones and other objects and injured them. They also damaged police vehicles, ambulances and fire brigade vehicles. The police have dispersed the protesters. Also used tear gas.
The whole matter started when the girl went missing late Saturday evening. Northern Territory Police Commissioner Martin Doull told during a press conference that a person named Jefferson Lewis had kidnapped and murdered the girl. After this he himself came to present himself at a town camp in Alice Springs. After he presented himself, the members of that town camp decided to punish Jefferson themselves.
Hundreds of people conducted a search operation in the dense forests. The body was recovered. The Police Commissioner said that he appeals to the entire community to maintain peace. I hope what we saw last night was just an exception. He further said that keeping Lewis’s own safety in mind, he was sent to Darwin, the capital of the Northern Territory, early on Friday. PM Anthony Albanese says that he understands the anger and disappointment of the people. He appealed to the community to unite.
