The bugle of assembly elections has been sounded in Assam. The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Sunday (March 15, 2026) has announced the dates of assembly elections in five states and union territories of the country including Assam. Announcing the dates, Central Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar said that assembly elections will be held in Assam from April 9.

Central Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar announced the election dates in the five states and union territories in a press conference along with Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi at Vigyan Bhawan in Delhi. He said that the notification for elections in Assam will be issued on Monday (March 16, 2026). After this, nominations for the elections will be filed till March 23, 2026. Scrutiny of nominations will be done on March 24, 2026.
After scrutiny, if any candidate wants to withdraw his name from the election, he can do so till Thursday (March 26, 2026). After this, voting will be held for the assembly elections in Assam on Thursday (April 9, 2026). After this, the counting of votes cast in Assam elections and the announcement of election results will be done on May 4, 2026.
How many voters are present in the voter list of Assam after SIR?
Before the announcement of the dates of assembly elections in Assam, the Election Commission conducted the process of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) to purify the voter list of the state. Under this process, the Election Commission conducted a door-to-door survey of the residents of Assam and identified genuine residents of the state and fake voters.
After this entire process, the Election Commission released the final voter list of Assam. After SIR, names of about 2.5 crore voters were confirmed in the final voter list of Assam. In which the number of male voters is around 1.25 crore and the number of female voters is also around 1.25 crore. Whereas the number of third gender people in the state is 343.
