The famous ‘Dand Yatra’, one of the most vibrant and spiritually significant folk traditions of the state of Odisha, also known as ‘Dand Naach’, is going on with great enthusiasm in many districts these days, especially in Ganjam district, however, amidst all this excitement, a disturbing incident has come to light from Sundarpalli village under Dharkot police station area of Ganjam district, which has cast a dark shadow on these celebrations.
The incident turned from an argument into a violent scuffle.
According to reports, when the ‘Panchu Danda’ ritual was going on during the Danda dance festival, a heated clash broke out between two rival Danda groups. One of these groups was from Hinjilikatu, while the other was from Purushottampur. What started as a mere face-off between the two sides soon turned into a violent scuffle. It is alleged that members of both the parties attacked each other with sticks and other things.
Which two parties clashed?
It is being told that this clash took place between Sanapati Danda Nacha Toli of Hinjilikatu and Gaudapati Danda Nacha Toli of Purushottampur. It is alleged that a dispute started between the two parties regarding giving way, but after some time the atmosphere deteriorated and both the parties came face to face and the incident turned into a violent clash.
Police arrived on information, took stock of the situation
A video of this violent clash that took place in Ganjam district of Odisha has gone viral on social media platforms. In this video, the chaotic atmosphere during the clash between the artists and supporters during the traditional presentation is also visible. As soon as information was received about the incident of violent clash during the festival, the local police reached the spot and took stock of the situation.
