Former Union Minister Dinesh Trivedi got big responsibility, made High Commissioner of Bangladesh

Dinesh Trivedi, MP from Barrackpore, West Bengal and former Union Minister, has been appointed as the High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh. Apart from the Railway Minister, Dinesh Trivedi has also served as the Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare in the UPA government.

Dinesh Trivedi has been given the responsibility of High Commission at a time when India and Bangladesh are trying to improve their relations after the Mohammad Yunus episode. The relations between the two countries deteriorated when a coup took place after the nationwide movement and the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was removed from power. Recently, parliamentary elections were held in Bangladesh in which Tariq Rahman of BNP was elected Prime Minister. After his arrival, signs of improvement in India-Bangladesh relations are clearly visible. Dinesh Trivedi will replace Prannoy Verma.

Dinesh Trivedi’s political career

Dinesh Trivedi was MP from Barrackpore Lok Sabha seat of West Bengal from 2009 to 2019. Apart from this, he has also been a Rajya Sabha MP during 1990-96 and 2002-08. In the year 2012, a political controversy had arisen over the proposal to increase passenger fares in the Railway Budget. Mamata Banerjee strongly opposed this decision and ultimately Trivedi had to resign from his post. Later, Mukul Roy was made Railway Minister from TMC quota.

Former High Commissioner had met Tariq Rehman

Dinesh Trivedi resigned from TMC on 12 February 2021 and joined BJP the next month on 6 March 2021. Former Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Prannoy Verma met Prime Minister Tariq Rahman on 6 April. During this meeting, issues related to the interests of India and Bangladesh were discussed. Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman and Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Advisor Humayun Kobir were also present in the meeting.

The Indian Embassy further said, ‘The High Commissioner conveyed India’s intention to work closely with the Government and people of Bangladesh by adopting a positive, constructive and forward-thinking approach on the basis of mutual interest and mutual benefit.’ Earlier, on the occasion of Eid, High Commissioner Prannoy Verma had met PM Tariq Rehman.
