Google AI Overview: Google has quietly removed search results related to some medical advice from its AI Overview feature. This decision was taken when it came to light that some health-related answers given by AI were misleading and were giving wrong medical information. AI summaries shown specifically for liver related diseases and liver function tests will no longer appear in some search queries.
Google’s action on wrong health summary
According to Android Authority’s report and The Guardian’s investigation, Google had received several complaints that AI Overview was not able to provide accurate information on serious health topics. After this, the company closed the summary created by AI on some sensitive questions related to liver. However, information on these topics will still be available as website links through a normal Google Search, but automatic AI summaries will not be shown.
There was already controversy regarding AI Overview
Google added AI Overview to the search engine last year, so that users can get quick and concise answers to their questions. But when this technology started giving medical advice, questions started being raised on it. Even a small mistake in health related information can cause big danger, hence it is considered natural to have a dispute regarding automated medical advice.
How was wrong medical information being created?
Usually AI Overview prepares a short answer to any search query and also provides links to related websites. But The Guardian reported that some medical results were described as “extremely sensitive and dangerous”.
In cases related to liver function tests, AI showed reference ranges that did not apply to every person. Important factors like age, gender, race, nationality and test methods used in different labs were not included in these.
Misplaced trust can be fatal
Doctors and health experts say that such AI generated information can give false confidence to people. If a person suffering from a serious illness considers himself healthy after seeing these incomplete or wrong data, then he will not consult the doctor on time. In such cases, delay in necessary treatment can even become life threatening.
What did Google say?
After these reports surfaced, a Google spokesperson said that the company is continuously working on improving its policies and the accuracy of AI models. He also admitted that changes were necessary in some cases, hence the medical summary related to AI Overview has been removed. However, advice is still being shown on many other health topics through AI Overview, regarding which more stringent steps can be taken in future.
What is the lesson for users?
This case once again reminds us that information available on the internet, especially health-related advice, cannot always be a substitute for a doctor’s opinion. This move by Google shows that although AI may be helpful, human expertise is still the most reliable in medical decisions.
