Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the NaMo Bharat Train and the much-awaited Meerut Metro in a grand program organized at Shatabdi Nagar station in Meerut on Sunday (22 February 2026). On this occasion, he flagged off both the services and described it as a historic day for Uttar Pradesh and the entire NCR region.
Addressing the program, the Prime Minister said that he also traveled in Meerut Metro before the inauguration. During this time he met many youth from school and college. PM Modi said that the youth told him while talking to him that they had not imagined such wonderful days. He was remembering those old times when in the evening there used to be silence on the entire route and there was an atmosphere of fear and dread. The Prime Minister said that on one hand law and order has improved, on the other hand people have also got modern means of safe and convenient travel.
Symbol of women power in India Rapid Rail
The Prime Minister also described Namo Bharat Rapid Rail as a symbol of women power. He said that in this project, daughters are working on many important positions like train operator and station control staff and are leading. He said that this is the picture of new India, where women are progressing in every field. In his address, PM Modi also targeted the opposition, especially Congress. He said that he had asked Congress to leave toxic politics and compete on the issue of development, but the opposition did not change its politics. He claimed that BJP has always kept development paramount and Metro expansion is an example of this.
Congress government targeted
The Prime Minister said that during the Congress government, there was metro service in only 5 cities of the country, whereas today under the BJP government, metro is operating in more than 25 cities. He alleged that earlier infrastructure projects used to get entangled in scams and technology had to be imported from abroad, but now the scams have stopped and the country is moving towards self-reliance. Referring to the international airport being built in Jewar, he said that such big projects provide employment even during construction and later create permanent employment by promoting industries and business.
The Prime Minister said that Uttar Pradesh is the land of labor and creation and the priority of the BJP government is the development of the country, convenience and prosperity of the people. With the operation of Namo Bharat train, the distance of 88 kilometers between Meerut and Delhi can now be covered in about 55 minutes. This project is being considered an important step towards strengthening regional connectivity and expanding the modern transportation system.
