Lyricist Javed Akhtar has demanded an apology from Bihar CM Nitish Kumar on the incident of pulling hijab, on which Janata Dal (United) has reacted. JDU leader Rajeev Ranjan has advised him that he does not need to interfere in political matters.
Talking to news agency IANS, Rajiv Ranjan said, ‘Javed Akhtar is a renowned lyricist of the country, but there is no need for him to interfere in politics. The kind of big decisions that Nitish Kumar has been taking during his tenure of 20 years for the upliftment and respect of women is commendable.
Rajeev Ranjan said, ‘This is the main reason why women have been receiving one-sided blessings in elections. This time also people saw that women were standing in a queue in comparison to men and voting to form the NDA government. In such a situation, there is no justification for such statement of Javed Akhtar. He should avoid such statements.
Recently, during the appointment letter distribution ceremony for AYUSH doctors, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was seen touching the niqab of a Muslim woman, after which there was an uproar on this issue. While many people opposed it, some people were justifying it by sharing old video clips of Javed Akhtar.
On social media, people started sharing an old video clip of Javed Akhtar, in which he is saying, ‘If a woman says that she is covering her face of her own free will, then she has been brainwashed. If you leave that then why would any woman want to cover her face? Does he hate his face? Why would she want to cover her face?
On Thursday (December 18, 2025), Javed Akhtar then made a post on the social media platform I condemn this in the strongest terms. Nitish Kumar should apologize unconditionally to that woman.
