Relations with Bangladesh improved after Younis’ departure, S Jaishankar invited Tariq Rehman’s close aide to visit India

Relations between India and Bangladesh seem to be improving. Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar has invited Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman to visit India. This invitation has been given at the right time. This invitation was given by India’s High Commissioner Prannoy Verma while paying a courtesy call on Foreign Minister Khalilur Rehman on Sunday afternoon.

In a statement issued in the evening, the Ministry of External Affairs said that Indian High Commissioner Prannoy Verma has expressed his government’s desire to work closely with the new government of Bangladesh to further advance bilateral cooperation. Here, Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman has said that on the basis of mutual interests, emphasis will be laid on building a future-thinking and balanced partnership for the welfare of the people of both the countries. Both the countries are taking important steps to improve relations. Also, both sides have agreed to maintain regular and constructive talks to further strengthen bilateral relations.

PM Modi had congratulated Tariq Rehman on becoming Prime Minister

Earlier, with the election of the new government in Bangladesh, both the countries have extended the hand of friendship. PM Modi himself had congratulated Tariq Rehman on becoming Prime Minister through social media. Apart from this, the Lok Sabha Speaker of India also attended the swearing-in ceremony of Tariq Rehman.

Relations between the two countries had soured in the last few years.

After the death of Sharif Osman Hadi in the year 2025, there was tension in the relations between the two countries. At that time Indian visa centers had banned their operations in Bangladesh. There were continuous protests in Bangladesh after the death of student leader Usman Hadi. During this period the protest had taken an anti-India form.

It started in the year 2024 when former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned from the post after the protests in Bangladesh. She had fled to India. On this, the Indian Visa Center official had said that whenever relations between the two countries deteriorate, or the security situation worsens, we have to close it.
