UPI Safety Tips: If you use UPI payment or net banking, then you need to stay safe from banking-related scams. Recently a new ‘Digital Lutera’ malware has been detected, which can steal money from your UPI account. This malware does not depend on calling and messaging for scam and does its work by directly accessing the Android phone. Let us know what this malware is and how it can be avoided.

What is ‘Digital Lutera’?

Gadgets360 was the first to report about this malware. It does not work like a traditional scam, where scammers break into the user’s account by sending a link through call or message. This is a different kind of fraud toolkit, which can bypass UPI bank account and SMS-based OTP verification. This malware enters the user’s device through APKs files and then does its work after getting permission.

How does this malware work?

This malware is being distributed through APK files. As soon as a user downloads the infected APK file, this malware will be installed on his device. At the time of installation, this APK file will ask for permission to write and read SMS. This malware starts its work as soon as the permission is received. While in the background, it silently watches the bank verification messages and with its help, the hackers controlling the malware break into the users’ accounts.

NPCI’s clarification has come

NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India), which operates the UPI platform, has come out with a clarification on this. NPCI says that the report of this malware has been analyzed and adequate arrangements have been made in UPI to protect users from such risks.

How to avoid such scams?

  • If you use an Android phone, then download apps only from trusted sources like Google Play Store.
  • If someone asks you to download the APK file by sending a link through message, refuse it. Never download apps from such links.
  • Keep Google Play Protect on in your phone and keep your phone software updated.
