In the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Tuesday (24 February), India did not take part in voting on an important resolution regarding the Russia-Ukraine war. This resolution demands a complete and unconditional ceasefire in Ukraine, which has been passed by the United Nations General Assembly on the completion of 4 years of war between the two countries.
Ukraine’s international border has also been supported in this resolution of the United Nations General Assembly. The 193-member United Nations General Assembly has adopted this resolution by a huge margin on Tuesday. 107 countries voted in favor of this proposal presented by Kiev and 12 were against it, while 51 countries did not vote.
India and China on the same side
India was also among the 51 countries which did not participate in this proposal. China also kept distance from voting. Apart from this, America, Brazil, Bangladesh, South Africa, Sri Lanka, United Arab Emirates and Bahrain also did not participate. In the name of support for everlasting peace in Ukraine, this resolution reiterates the demand for a complete, just and everlasting peace in accordance with international law including the UN Charter.
Voting on a proposal does not make it legally binding, but it does have its own political impact. Russia’s special friends India and China remained absent from voting. Apart from this, it is also very important for the Trump administration to stay away from this voting.
What did Guterres say about the Russia-Ukraine war?
During the four years of Russia-Ukraine war, the 15-member UN Security Council has always been in deadlock. It has failed to take action on the Ukraine war because Russia has a veto in the Security Council. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the Ukraine war remains a stain on our collective conscience and reiterated his demand for an immediate ceasefire.
The Ukrainian President thanked the countries that supported him in voting and said that I am thankful to all those 107 countries who stood with Ukraine in the United Nations today to save lives.
