The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has increased rapidly in recent times and people are now downloading AI apps in large numbers. Sensor Tower’s latest global mobile report has revealed that in 2025, AI assistants will be at the forefront in terms of maximum downloads, in-app purchases and time spent. ChatGPT benefited the most from this trend, which was downloaded rapidly from Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store.
ChatGPT becomes the second most downloaded app
According to Sensor Tower data, in 2025, ChatGPT downloads have increased by 148%, in-app purchases by 254% and time spent on the app by 426%. This means that people are not only downloading this app faster but are also paying money for premium features and are also spending more time on it. The effect of this was that ChatGPT became the most downloaded app last year and the second most downloaded app till date in the whole world. Other apps downloaded in this category include Google Gemini, DeepSeek, DuaBio, Grok, Meta Eye and Microsoft Copilot etc.
Dominance of social media apps still continues
Gaming apps have been left behind in this storm of AI apps, but the dominance of social media platforms still remains. Last year, users around the world spent 2.5 trillion hours on social media apps. That means every user has spent about 90 minutes daily on social media platforms, which is 5 percent more than in 2024. TikTok still remains at the forefront in terms of downloads, in-app purchases and total time spent.
India leads in downloading AI apps
India leads the world in downloading generative AI apps and using chatbots. India alone accounts for 20 percent of the total apps downloaded worldwide, but India lags behind in terms of in-app purchases and usage. That means, after downloading the app, people in India are not spending money for its premium or other features. In 2025, only 1% of Indian users were in in-app purchases.
