‘Expect Suryakumar Yadav to bowl in the last over…’, know what and why CJI Surya Kant said on T-20 matches.

Supreme Court Chief Justice Surya Kant, while referring to T-20 matches, told the students studying law that no lawyer can be expert in every field of law profession. They should recognize their potential and then make their mark in that part of the law profession. During this, CJI Surya Kant also gave the example of Indian cricket team batsman Suryakumar Yadav and bowler Jasprit Bumrah.

According to the report of Live Law, CJI Surya Kant attended the 16th convocation ceremony of Gujarat National Law University in Gandhinagar on Saturday (February 28, 2026). Here he said that in T-20 matches, you cannot expect every player to bat and bowl well. He said that in the last overs of a T-20 match, no one can expect Suryakumar Yadav to bowl or Jasprit Bumrah to bat.

CJI Surya Kant said that similarly, lawyers should also gradually identify in which area they have capabilities and then create their professional identity in that area. He said that the law profession rarely rewards those who try to do everything equally. The CJI said that lawyers who become famous often quietly and with time identify where their thinking finds a natural direction. They don’t reach this point by trying everything equally.

The CJI said that often in the initial days of law practice, the difference between the study of law and the reality of the profession becomes clear. He said that while books provide theoretical understanding, actual practice requires discipline, responsibility and the ability to work under practical constraints.

The CJI said that public confidence in the legal profession can depend on the honesty and consistency of those who practice law. He said that every decision taken by a lawyer contributes to strengthening or weakening the justice system.
