Apple MacBook: Every year Apple is adding new options to its MacBook lineup to provide the right device for different types of users. At present the company has many options ranging from premium to budget. The recently launched MacBook Air M5, MacBook Air M4 and the affordable MacBook Neo are part of this strategy. There is a lot of difference in the design, performance, memory and battery of these three laptops. Let us understand which model will be better for you.
Design and display
The look of MacBook Air M4 and MacBook Air M5 is almost similar. Both have Apple’s classic aluminum unibody design which gives a light, thin and premium feel. Both these laptops have a 13.6-inch Liquid Retina display which is sharp, full of colors and capable of providing brightness up to about 500 nits. This gives a much better experience while watching videos, editing photos or web browsing. The M5 version is also expected to get a larger 15-inch display option.
On the other hand, MacBook Neo has been designed keeping in mind the budget users. It has a simple 13-inch LCD screen. It is fine for everyday tasks but it does not have the same brightness and color quality as the Air models.
Performance and processor
The biggest difference between the three laptops is seen in their performance. MacBook Air M4 has Apple’s M4 chipset which includes 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU. This setup is considered quite powerful for multitasking, editing and general professional work.
MacBook Air M5 is considered to be an upgrade of M4. It has a new M5 chip which comes with better graphics, more efficient CPU and advanced AI capabilities. This can be a better option for those working on large video files, graphics design or heavy apps.
Whereas MacBook Neo takes a slightly different route. It has A18 Pro processor based on Apple’s mobile chip which has 6-core CPU and 5-core GPU. It can easily handle everyday tasks like web browsing, video streaming, taking notes and document editing.
Memory and Storage
The memory and storage options also tell what kind of users these laptops are made for. The MacBook Air M4 starts with 16GB of unified memory that can be expanded up to 32GB. Storage can start from 256GB and go up to 2TB.
The MacBook Air M5 goes even further. In this, base storage starts from 512GB and can be available up to 4TB in the top variant. Besides, its memory bandwidth is also better so that heavy apps can run faster.
Things have been kept quite simple in MacBook Neo. It has 8GB RAM and 256GB or 512GB storage options which can be considered sufficient for students and light use.
Connectivity and battery
MacBook Air models have two Thunderbolt ports and Apple’s MagSafe charging system. Apart from this, new wireless standards like Wi-Fi 6E are also available in them. Some premium features have been reduced in MacBook Neo. It mainly has USB-C port and basic wireless connectivity.
Talking about battery life, MacBook Air M4 can last for about 18 hours on a single charge. Due to the new chip in the M5 model, it is expected to get slightly better battery backup. MacBook Neo can also provide a full day’s backup in normal use, although it cannot provide as long a battery time as the Air series.
Which one would be better to buy?
If you do professional work, video editing or heavy tasks then MacBook Air M5 will be considered the most powerful option. Its price is around Rs 1,19,900. The MacBook Air M4 is a good option for those who want premium performance but on a lower budget. Its price starts from around Rs 90,000.
Whereas MacBook Neo can become the most affordable option for those entering the world of Apple. With a starting price of around Rs 69,990, it is considered suitable for students and basic users.
