Kashmir remained closed for a week following violent protests over the death of Iranian leader Ali Khamenei. After a week, educational institutions in the valley have reopened on Monday (9 March). Education Department officials said, “Following the government’s decision, schools and other higher educational institutions have reopened today.”
Dressed in uniform, students of different ages arrived at their institutes on Monday morning, many of whom had returned after more than 80 days, as it was the first day of school for kindergarten and middle level classes after the winter break. Let us tell you that after the protests started in the valley after the assassination of Khamenei on February 28, schools, colleges and universities were closed for a week since last Monday.
NEET-UG 2026 application deadline extended
Secondary schools and higher institutions reopened after winter vacation on 23 February, middle and primary schools were scheduled to reopen on 2 March, but were delayed due to the protests. Meanwhile, in a relief to the students pursuing medical studies in the Valley, the Union Education Ministry has extended the NEET-UG 2026 application deadline for the students of J&K as mobile and internet services were also affected due to the unrest.
The last date for form submission has been extended by three days and will now close on March 11. Jammu and Kashmir Education Minister Sakina Itu thanked Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan for extending the application deadline.
What did Sakina Itu say?
Sakina Itu said, “This decision will greatly benefit many students of Kashmir Valley, who were facing difficulty in submitting their forms due to slow internet speed.” On social media platform X, the minister thanked Dharmendra Pradhan for immediately considering the request of the state government. He further said that this timely help will ensure that no interested candidate misses the opportunity to apply for this important national level medical entrance examination.
However, tight security arrangements have been made in the Kashmir Valley to prevent any protest by students or others, as there is tension in the Middle East and the Muslim world due to the ongoing Iran-Israel-US war. Tension will also be high because the funeral of martyred Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei has been delayed. He was to be laid to rest in Mashad on Friday, but the burial was delayed due to continuous bombing.
A senior police officer said that there is a possibility of more protests when the burial takes place, hence tight security arrangements will continue. He advised people not to misuse social media.
