The Modi government has decided to release social activist and engineer Sonam Wangchuk, who was arrested over violence in Ladakh. The government has canceled his detention under the National Security Act (NSA) with immediate effect.
Sonam Wangchuk was arrested after the violence in Ladakh a few months ago. The government says that this decision has been taken with the aim of strengthening the environment of peace and stability in Ladakh and carrying forward constructive dialogue with all parties. According to the government, to fulfill this objective and after due deliberations, it has been decided to cancel the custody of Sonam Wangchuk with immediate effect.

On 24 September 2025, a serious law and order situation had arisen due to violence in Leh. According to the government, Sonam Wangchuk was detained under the provisions of NSA on 26 September 2025 under the order issued by the District Magistrate of Leh for the purpose of maintaining law and order. Sonam Wangchuk has spent almost half of the custody period in jail.
The Central Government is actively communicating with various stakeholders and society leaders in Ladakh to address the concerns of the people of the region. However, the current environment of bandhs and protests has proved bad for the society. The protests have caused significant damage to various sections of the community, including students, job seekers, businesses, tourism operators and tourists, and to the economy of Ladakh.
