A major reason for the failure of talks between America and Iran in Pakistan has come to light. In the Islamabad Talk, the US had proposed to Iran a ban on uranium enrichment for 20 years, but Tehran said that it could agree to it only for five years. This claim has been made in the reports of America’s New York Times and Wall Street Journal.
The New York Times quoted two senior Iranian officials and a US official as saying that Tehran has proposed suspending uranium enrichment for five years, which the Trump administration rejected, insisting on a period of 20 years. This demand made by America made it clear that the Trump administration has made a major change in the earlier demands in which Tehran was demanded to permanently stop nuclear enrichment. The US concern was that through this Iran could gain the ability to make nuclear weapons.
This matter can be sealed between Iran and America
Foreign affairs expert Ian Bremer said that the US and Iran could finalize an agreement on a 12.5-year suspension on uranium enrichment. There was a big meeting between America and Iran in Islamabad, which was a senior level meeting after the Islamic Revolution in Iran in 1979.
Repeatedly such messages are being received from America and Iran that back channel talks are going on between the two countries and a deal can be made regarding peace agreement. Even though America has blockaded Iranian ports. Officials told the Wall Street Journal that they were discussing a second round of face-to-face talks, but did not provide any details.
Apart from uranium, issues were also stuck on Hormuz.
Apart from uranium enrichment, the main issue discussed during the Islamabad talk included the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has kept closed, but America has promised to reopen it.
Reuters quoted sources as saying that where the meeting was held between the delegations of the two countries, phones were not allowed. Due to this, when there was a break, JD Vance and Ghalibaf sent messages to their respective countries. A Pakistani government source said, ‘We were hopeful during the talks that some success would definitely be achieved and both sides would reach an agreement. However, circumstances changed.
Araghchi’s attitude became heated in the meeting
According to reports, the tone of Iran’s Foreign Minister, who is often seen calm, also became sharp during the meeting. He had told the US delegation during the meeting, ‘How can we trust you, when in the last Geneva meeting you had said that America will not attack while diplomacy continues?’
80% of the agreement was reached
During the meeting in Pakistan, while Washington’s focus was on the nuclear issue and Hormuz, Tehran wanted a broader consensus. Government source said that when the atmosphere in the meeting became tense, Asim Munir and Ishaq Dar asked for a tea break. Earlier, loud noises could be heard outside the room. Another source involved in the talks said that both the parties had reached very close to the agreement i.e. 80 percent, but then some such proposals came forward on which the talks went wrong. Although an attempt was made by Pakistan to soften the atmosphere, no one from either side showed any desire to reduce tension.
