Indian Railways: India overtook the railway network of Russia, China and UK, created history, Railway Minister revealed in the Parliament

Indian Railways has achieved a historic achievement in the field of railway electrification and has completed 99.2% electrification of its broad gauge network. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav has given this information in the Parliament. Along with this, Indian Railways has overtaken many developed countries at the global level. According to the June 2025 report of the International Railway Union (UIC), India’s position in this matter is much better than countries like the United Kingdom (39%), Russia (52%) and China (82%), while only Switzerland is ahead with 100% electrification.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said in a written reply to a question in Parliament that railway electrification is being implemented in mission mode. In the last 60 years before 2014, only 21,801 route kilometers were electrified, whereas between 2014 and 2025, a record 46,900 route kilometers have been electrified. Electrification of 7,188 route kilometers has been completed in the year 2023-24 and 2,701 route kilometers in 2024-25. Along with this, the Railway Minister said that 14 railway zones of the country have been completely 100% electrified. Which includes Central Railway, Northern Railway, Eastern Railway, Western Railway, South Central Railway, Kolkata Metro and Konkan Railway.

How is the condition of North Western Railway and Southern Railway?
Apart from this, North Western Railway and Southern Railway have reached about 98% electrification, while North East Frontier and South Western Railway have reached about 95% electrification. With this, the process of 100% electrification has been completed in 25 states and union territories of the country. In which 100% electrification has been achieved in 25 states/union territories including Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, West Bengal and Delhi. Whereas in the north-eastern states of Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tripura and Mizoram, 100% electrification of the existing broad gauge network has been completed. 92% electrification has been done in Assam and work is going on on the remaining routes also.

New line and multi-tracking project
The Railway Minister has also clarified that all new line and multi-tracking projects are being approved and built along with electrification. However, some projects may take time due to factors like approvals related to forest land, geographical conditions, weather and law and order.
