Chitradurga Student Death: Shocking incident in Karnataka school, 16 year old student jumped from the third floor

A 16-year-old student died under suspicious circumstances at DVS Residential School located in Bharamsagar village of Chitradurga district of Karnataka. According to police, the student allegedly jumped from the third floor of the hostel. A case of negligence has been registered against the school administration, warden, principal and a class 10 student. The deceased has been identified as Kotresh, a resident of Kariyammana Halli village of Bharamsagar Hobli and an SSLC (Class 10) student in the school.

According to the complaint lodged by Kotresh’s father Gurulingaiah, on the night of 15 February 2026, Kotresh had a dispute with his classmate Chetan over some issue. It is alleged that during the dispute, Chetan hit her with a slipper and tried to attack her with an iron rod. According to the police, the next morning on 16 February 2026, at around 7:15 am, the student jumped from the third floor of the hostel. CCTV footage of the incident has also surfaced, in which pictures of the student’s fall have been captured. The footage has been made part of the investigation.

Post mortem and investigation ongoing

After the incident, the student was taken to Bharamsagar Hospital, where post-mortem was conducted. On the basis of the complaint, the police have registered a case against the school administration, warden, principal and the concerned student under provisions related to negligence. Bharamsagar Police Inspector Prasad visited the incident site and inspected it. Police are investigating whether the student’s death was suicide or occurred under some other circumstances. Detailed investigation of the case is going on and the police is trying to connect the entire sequence of events.

NCRB report

According to NCRB report, suicide cases are increasing alarmingly in India. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data of 2021 and 2022, a large number of people are sacrificing their lives every year in the country. This has become a serious social and mental health issue. According to statistics, the number of men who commit suicide is much more than women. The ratio is more than 70:30. This means that out of every 10 cases, approximately 7 are men and 3 are women.
