The tricolor hoisted on the Red Fort is prepared in Hubli, Karnataka. Khadi cloth is made by workers of a village in Balakot. Karnataka Khadi Village Industries Joint Federation (KKGSSF) makes this tricolor. This is the only organization in the country which has got a license from the Government of India to make the tricolor.
Flags are prepared according to Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). Federation Secretary HN Antin said that 126 employees make the tricolor throughout the year and most of them are women. Khadi for the national flag is prepared in Tulsigeri village of Balakot. After this the tricolor is stitched in Hubli Centre. The order for hoisting the tricolor at the Red Fort comes about 2 months in advance.
How is the tricolor made?
The cost of the tricolor hoisted at the Red Fort is Rs 6500. There are 6 steps to make the tricolor. First of all hand spinning is done, then weaving, dyeing, chakra printing, sewing and tying have to be done. According to Antin, 21×14 feet flags are installed on the high mast and their cost is Rs 17,800. The flag to be placed in the cars of ministers is available for Rs 300 and the tricolor to be placed on the table is available for Rs 200. According to the flag code, the shape of the national flag should be 3:2 i.e. rectangular.

To prepare the tricolor, the guidelines of BIS have to be strictly followed, because there is no scope for any mistake in the coloration, shape, quantity of thread and strength of the yarn of the national flag. Violation of the standards set under the Flag Code of India 2002 is a serious offense and can lead to punishment, fine or both.
KKGSSF was founded by a Gandhian group in Karnataka to promote Khadi and village industries. Venkatesh T became the first chairman of Magadi Sangh. In 2004, the Federation started a unit to make the national flag. Later it was given license from Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC). The headquarters of Khadi Sangh in Hubli is spread over 17 acres.
