The problems of Indigo, the country’s largest airline, seem to be increasing. Competition Commission of India (CCI) has ordered a detailed investigation in view of the serious allegations against IndiGo. This matter is related to the cancellation of thousands of flights in December 2025, due to which passengers across the country had to face a lot of trouble.
CCI believes that initial investigation has revealed that Indigo had taken advantage of its huge market share by canceling a large number of flights simultaneously. This led to a reduction in air travel and passengers were left with limited options during the peak season. CCI has considered this a decision to deliberately limit services under competition law.
What did CCI say?
CCI’s 16-page order states that IndiGo’s market share is around 60 to 65 percent. If a company with such a huge holding suddenly cancels thousands of flights, it causes direct loss to the passengers and has a negative impact on the entire market. CCI suspects that after the cancellation of flights, there remained a shortage of seats and during this period the ticket prices increased. Now it will be investigated whether the passengers were forced to buy expensive tickets.
What happened in December?
By the beginning of December 2025, Indigo had canceled about 4,500 flights. The company had attributed this to irregularities in pilot roster planning and the new pilot rest rules of DGCA. The result was that more than 3 lakh passengers were affected, ticket prices increased and there was chaos at many airports. After this case, in January, DGCA had imposed a fine of Rs 22.20 crore on IndiGo and ordered the airline to reduce its winter schedule by 10 percent.
What will happen next now?
Now CCI has handed over this matter to the Director General (DG). The DG will investigate whether IndiGo misused its large market share and whether it caused harm to passengers and competition.
