National Monetization Pipeline 2.0: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has launched National Monetization Pipeline 2.0 (NMP 2.0). Under this Asset Monetization Scheme, the government has estimated asset monetization potential of up to ₹16.72 lakh crore in the next five years. Now from where will the government raise this Rs 16.72 lakh crore? For this, it is very important to understand what is asset monetization? Is the government selling its assets? And what impact will it have on common people or investors? Let us understand it in simple language.

What does asset monetization mean?

First of all, let us make one thing clear that asset monetization does not mean selling government assets. This means that the government gives the right to operate and manage its existing infrastructure assets, such as roads, rail lines, pipelines, airports, power transmission lines or warehouses, to private companies for a fixed period of time. The private company earns from that asset and in return pays a lump sum or fixed amount to the government. The ownership rights remain with the government. It can be considered as giving lease and not selling.
