Instagram is soon going to bring a feature for the safety of teen users. After this, if any teen user searches anything related to suicide or self-harm, a notification will be sent to his/her parents. Let us tell you that the company is strengthening the safeguards related to sensitive mental health content and this will be a new update in its teen accounts and parental supervision tools. Let us know about this feature in detail.
Why is this feature being introduced?
Instagram said that these alerts have been designed to make parents aware. With its help they will be able to know that their child needs support. This non-essential notification will be kept away. The company said that most teen users do not search for self-harm, but if someone does, Instagram will block that search and will redirect them to the helpline or support system.
How will the new feature work?
This feature will start from next week. The company will send an alert to the parents and teens who have enrolled themselves in supervision in advance to inform them that the alert feature is being activated. After this, if a teen continuously searches for something that could harm himself, his parents will be notified. These notifications can be sent through in-app alerts as well as via email, text message and WhatsApp. It will contain information related to the teen’s search as well as advice from experts so that she can take help from the right people in this critical situation. This alert will be sent to the parents only if the teen user has made many self-harming searches in a short period of time. The company has also said that in many cases, parents may receive notifications even when there would be no concern about the teen’s safety.
