Gig and online delivery platform workers have announced a strike across the country on December 31. Employees of companies like Swiggy, Zomato, Amazon and Flipkart will be on strike demanding salary, security and good working conditions. Due to this, e-commerce and food delivery services may be affected.
What are the demands of the employees?
Employees working on gig and platforms have many demands. These demands include a guarantee of income at least equal to the minimum wage, a clean and transparent wage system with a minimum payment of Rs 20 per kilometer for cab drivers, overtime payment for working eight hours and more a day, insurance and social security for accidents, illness and emergencies, stopping models like ’10 minute delivery’ as it increases rash and unsafe driving.
Employees also demand that it is dangerous to drive late at night due to dense fog in winter, hence the delivery should be stopped after 11 pm during the fog.
Will this strike make a difference to the restaurant’s business?
On this, restaurant owners from different areas of Delhi said that on the night of 31st December, there is a party in every house, customers and staff will face a lot of problems, I believe their demands should be considered. 30% of our business is done through online delivery, if this does not happen then it will make a huge difference to our business.
IFAT General Secretary Sheikh Salahuddin said that about 2 lakh employees have joined us in this campaign. Tomorrow we will conduct digital strike in 3 zones. First from 2 pm to 4 pm, then from 4 pm to 8 pm and then from 8 pm to midnight. During this strike, our workers will switch off their phones or log out of their accounts from the delivery app.
