There was a heated exchange between officials of Iran and America at the United Nations on Monday (April 27). There was fierce conflict over Tehran’s nuclear program and Iran’s selection as vice-chairman of the conference to review the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
What did American officials say
Christopher Yaw, Assistant Secretary of the US Bureau of Arms Control and Nonproliferation, said that Iran has not met its international commitments and has failed to fully cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). He further said that his (Iran’s) appointment to this post is an insult. Iran has described this statement as politically motivated, while on the other hand, United Nations (UN) Secretary General Antonio Guterres has appealed for a ceasefire and peace talk.
Iran’s ambassador counterattacks
Iran’s ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency, Reza Najafi, rejected the US claims as baseless and politically motivated. He said that America, being the only country to use nuclear weapons, should not pass judgment on others.
