Sri Lanka had a poor performance in the T20 World Cup, this veteran left the team; suddenly took a big decision

Sri Lankan cricket team could not make it to the semi-finals of the 2026 T20 World Cup. The team played the last match of Super-8 against Pakistan, in which they had to face a close defeat by 5 runs. Although the team had already been eliminated. Now after playing the last match in the T20 World Cup, a veteran has left the team.

A report published in ESPNcricinfo said that Sri Lankan head coach Sanath Jayasuriya has resigned from his post. Although the report said that he had not officially informed the Sri Lanka Cricket Board about this decision, but he had already decided that this would be his last stint as a World Cup coach.

The decision was taken 2 months ago

Jayasuriya was quoted in the report as saying, “I think the time has come to give the responsibility to someone else. That’s why during the England series about two months ago, I had said that I did not expect to remain in this post for long. I had taken the decision only then. I thought that I would be able to bid farewell to the World Cup with a good performance as a coach. I could not do it as I wanted, I am sad about that.”

The contract is till June

Jayasuriya said, “My contract is till June. I have not yet given any official news to Sri Lanka Cricket. They don’t even know that I am going to say this. I will have to go and talk to them. If they can appoint someone (to coach the team) then they should obviously do so.”

Sri Lanka’s performance in the tournament

It is noteworthy that Sri Lanka entered the Super-8 by winning three out of four matches in the league stage. But Super-8 went very badly for the team. The Sri Lankan team could not win a single match in the next phase of the T20 World Cup.
