‘Can’t make guidelines like Australia and Saudi’, SC tells petitioner questioning the quality of water in plastic bottles

The Supreme Court has refused to hear the petition challenging the quality standards of plastic water bottles. The petitioner claims that the standards of bottled water in India are very old. Companies should be asked to adopt Euro 2 standard.

The court told the petitioner to go to villages and backward areas and see what problems people have to face for water there. When he goes to these areas and sees such things, he will know the ground level reality. The CJI asked the petitioner whether, considering the current circumstances, he felt that the US guidelines could be implemented here. Keep the ground reality in mind.

According to the report of Live Law, on Thursday (December 18, 2025), the bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi said that the ground reality should be understood. Guidelines like America or Australia cannot be issued in India. The court asked the petitioner to apply to the competent authority.

Chief Justice Surya Kant said that if the petitioners had raised the issue of water supply in villages, we would have understood because there is no facility there, but what details should be there on the water bottle is an unnecessary legal debate.

The CJI told the petitioner that you are citing the guidelines of Australia and Saudi Arabia. This is just mere talk. He said that when Mahatma Gandhi came to India, he went to rural areas. When you go to poverty areas and see how they bring water, then you will know the reality. The CJI asked the petitioner to give these suggestions to the administration, he is sure that they will be considered there.
